DVDROM Glow

Installed some leds into the top
of my dvdrom on the second box I am
modding.
They are actually glued up inside the top
of the metal dvdrom case.. was tricky so that
disc or tray didnt touch em but go it workin.

This one is going to be a halo3 cutout,
with blue acyrlic window, and all the same
blue leds inside. Its in progress.

Gives it that extra little touch.
Never seen this been done before but i've gotta admit it's got a good effect with blue leds Wink

Just to clear up,
I tried havent found anyway to fit the leds in any drives
but the samsungs. Seems only those have enough space between the
drive tray and the lid. Just a bit info.

but I tried everything I could think of
and didnt see anyway get em in there to

dude that looks sweet. i think im going to have to install a clear drive tray and put the blue led's in as well. It will look real good with my halo 3 case. Thanks for the idea man. Oh and how small of led's did you use? If you can throw a link up on this thread so i can take a look at exactly what else to get. But yeah nice mod

I used 3mm super bright LEDs off ebay from Hong Kong..lol
I install all my LED's and then I put one

150 Ohm (1/4watt) 5% resistor in the positive line.

This will let your LED's function perfect on a 12v source

you can get prewired leds with resistors already sodered in
but the clearance inside the dvdrom is tiny and I did alot of
mod and sanding of the leds themselves to get it to fit inside
the rom without touching or effecting disc play.

Be very careful and makesure everything is clear of a disc and
tray before you do this and spin up a disc or you could really eff
up a drive. I will take some more pics here soon of exactly where they are placed inside.

REMEMBER will only work with samsung model drives....trust me
ive tried with others.

here pics of how mines wired.

Once agian like I always do, the power and ground wires
are sodered to existing 12v and ground soder connections
on the back the motherboard where the power plug is
sodered to the motherboard.

I would use flat, flexible LED strips, not dome LEDs.

Trun, how would you get the flex strip pointing the right way? Doesn't seem like a lot of space in there for a bracket.

They make self-adhesive flex strips that have small SMD LEDs in them. As for pointing the right way, it's light, it just needs to flood the area to give a lighting effect.
